I've recreated an old map from the 1930s I have in a beautiful atlas. The original shows travel times from London by "railway and steamer connexions," whereas this shows travel times from Ebbsfleet, soon to be fully (and excitingly) functional.

Sorry about the series of map posts lately: I have a slight obsession, so it won't stop. I will be creating a series of city-diagrams in due course. This is probably the closest I'll get to creating a clear diagram of London - it is one of the few cities which defies being simplified into a few lines and points. So this is my subjective diagram - everybody's London is different.

London: The Real Ecstacity

I've dipped in and out of Nigel Coates' Guide to Ecstacity for ages (literally years). I think it epitomises, and of course has affected, my view of the city and is what I look for when visiting cities. Markets are the easiest Ecstacity-esque spaces to be found, but London as a whole is perhaps the real Ecstacity for me. There's something distinctly ecstatic about travelling between Bengal, Egypt, Vietnam, China and the Caribbean on the tube.

Driftwood: Beauty in Contrast

This is the Architectural Association's Summer Pavilion in Bedford Square. For me, not only is the object itself visually satisfying, but it lends a refreshed beauty to its surroundings. The aesthetic contrast is perhaps overwhelming at first but feels so right as the driftwood wraps around you, like a big hug.

The beginning of something new. Always a mixture of apprehension and excitement.

The blank canvas; where to start? Where will it go? When will it end? Will it succeed? What is the objective? Is this really the beginning or the culmination of life so far?

I have no answers. It scares me slightly. But that is the point.

Fear of failure in a world where everybody produces and even more people consume is a self-perpetuating affliction.

Let it flow. Think about what you can do for others, not what they will think of you.
